Project Number 3 (100 points)

Purpose: Help you continue to develope your design skills in creating well-planned, well-designed web pages. Give you more knowledge regarding xhtml, cascading style sheets and media on the web.

For this proejct, you are to design a micro-site. A micro-site is a miniature web site often viewed as part of a larger site. The subject matter for the site will be to promote an event. The event could be a concert, a conference, the release of a new CD, even the premiere of a television show. Below are the requirements for the site:

• You must have a homepage and 5 other pages.
• One of the 5 pages should be a thumbnail gallery
• Use CSS to help you lay out your page AND format your text
• Rollovers for your navigation
• An E-mail link
• Alt tags for images
• Titles for each page
• At least one rich media file (.mp3, .mov, .wmv, etc.)
• Upload your site to a server

Preparation points
To help you refine your design concepts and complete the project on-time, there are four checkpoints (see attached schedule for due dates):
1 - Create 15 thumbnails to show your ideas. Complete the Project Summary defining the parameters and goals of your web site. (2 points)
2 - Refine three to five thumbnails and complete more detailed roughs that give us a better idea of your design. Generate a flow chart explaining the elements and navigation of your web site. (2 points)
3 - Using Dreamweaver, create the homepage of the site, which we will review as a class. (2 points)
4 - Using Dreamweaver, show two sub-pages to your site for class review. (2 points)

Criteria for Grading:
navigation (How user-friendly and intuitive is the navigation? Does the size and placement of the navigational elements give them appropriate emphasis?)
design (Have you used dominance, continuity, color, contrast, variety and balance to create a unique look and feel to your site? Does the design help accomplish the goal of your site? Have you used a grid structure to help you organize your content?)
visual hierarchy (Have you used color and/or size and position to create a visual flow of information? Is there a focal point on each page)
typography (Is the font readable on the web, is it appropriate for the subject matter of the site? Have you chunked your text and used subheads to make the type more readable? Is there an ample margin around the text?)
functionality (Does everything work on your site? Have you included all the required elements listed above?)

Project No. 2 - Webzine (100 points)

PDF for download >>

objective
Increase your ability to create a web experience that is unique, functional and highly usable. A secondary objective is to increase your knowledge of Dreamweaver.

summary of project
The purposes for a web site vary greatly. Some sites exist to promote a specific event. Many sites are used to dispense information about a company. Still others are used to sell goods or services. The goal of a site dictates to a large extent its design and structure. Your job is to create a fictional web magazine and design a web site for it. The name and subject matter is up to you. Keep in mind we will be critiquing this site as a class, so choose your subject matter appropriately. Choose something you are interested in, in fact use an exsiting magazine that you read. You will need to design a masthead (logo) for your webzine as well as the look to the whole site. Do you have to write all of the articles and features for the site? No, you can glean them from existing magazines or web sites.

requirements
• each page may have, at the most, a total of 3-6 jpgs, gifs or pngs
• homepage and 5 subpages
• use cascading style sheets to format your text
• all pages must have unique titles
• your pages should be designed to be accessible to those with disabilities
• each page should download in 10-15 seconds on a 56k modem
• upload your site to the studentavc.uvsc.edu server

preparation points
To help you refine your design concepts and complete the project on-time, there are four checkpoints (see calendar for due dates):

1 - Complete the Project Summary defining the parameters and goals of your web site. Create 15-20 thumbnails to show your ideas for the design of the masthead and interface. (2 points)
2 - Choose 5 of your thumbnails and refine them into more detailed roughs that give us a better idea of your design. Generate a flow chart explaining the elements and navigation of your site. (2 points)
3 - Using Dreamweaver, create the homepage of the site, which we will review as a class. (2 points)
4 - Using Dreamweaver, show three sub-pages to your site for class review. (2 points)

criteria for grading
navigation (How user-friendly and intuitive is the navigation? Does the size and placement of the navigational elements give them appropriate emphasis? Do we know where we are, where we have been and where we can go on each page?)
design (Have you used dominance, continuity, color, contrast, variety and balance to create a unique look and feel to your site? Is it interesting to look at? Is the masthead well-designed?)
visual hierarchy (Have you used color and/or size and position to create a visual flow of information? Have you used column grids to organize your content?)
typography (Is the font readable on the web, does it accurately reflect the subject matter of the site? Have you used style sheets to format the text? Have you chunked your text and created summaries and/or subheads to give the viewer context for the information?)
functionality (Does everything work on your site? Have you included all the required elements listed above?)

HTML Project (50 points)
Choose an artist that lived in the 20th century or before and create a home page and three subpages that tell us about the artist and some of his/her work. These pages must be HAND CODED. Please search the web for images. For the text, you can log on to the web and use a search engine to search for information about your artist. The home page and subpages for your site should NOT be visually intense. The purpose of this project is to give you practice coding in xhtml.

Required elements in your “artist” site:
• home page and 3 subpages
• each page must have links to the other pages (using relative links)
• a link to another web site (using an absolute link)
• one of the pages must contain a table
• an email link to you
• include a line on each page telling us the source for your text (example: source: The Modern Museum of Art, www.moma.org)

Preparation points
To help you prepare for the design of your site, you will create thumbnails of your pages and a flowchart. These are worth 2 points, see syllabus for due dates.

Criteria for grading
For this assignment, you will be graded primarily on your web site’s functionality and how accurate your html code is. A secondary consideration will be the design and usability of your site.

Turning in your project
You will turn in this assignment in two ways: 1) you will upload your site to a server 3) you will print out the code of each page of your site to be reviewed and graded.
